National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

April 12–18, 2026  ·  Washington County Emergency Communications District E9-1-1

Each year during the second full week of April, Emergency Communications Centers across the nation pause to honor the men and women who serve as the vital link between the public and emergency responders. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is a time to recognize the extraordinary dedication of our 911 dispatchers, call-takers, and communications professionals who answer the call — every call — with skill, composure, and compassion.

This year Washington County Emergency Communications District is celebrating NPSTW with the theme, "9-1-1 Academy - Where Every Call Is a Test." The theme speaks directly to the reality these professionals face every single day. Whether it is a life-threatening medical emergency, a house fire, or a call in the dark of night from someone who has nowhere else to turn, telecommunicators must be ready. They have seconds to assess, prioritize, and dispatch — and they do so with unwavering professionalism.

Our telecommunicators are the backbone of public safety. Day in and day out, they show up ready to face whatever comes through that headset — without hesitation, without pause. They are tested with every call, and every single time, they rise to meet it. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is our opportunity to tell them what we know to be true: the work they do matters, the lives they touch are countless, and the community they serve is deeply grateful. These professionals are not just employees — they are heroes operating quietly behind the scenes, and this week belongs to them.

Washington County ECD Director Matherly

Behind every successful emergency response is a telecommunicator who gathered critical information, kept a caller calm, and guided responders to exactly where they needed to be. Their work is often invisible to the public, but to the first responders in the field — and to the families whose loved ones made it home — their impact is immeasurable.

As we observe National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we invite the community to join us in celebrating and thanking these dedicated public servants. Take a moment to recognize the professionals who answer when it matters most — because for them, every call truly is a test, and they pass with distinction every time.
